Seeing the Old Testament with New Testament Eyes This introductory talk will show the necessity of reading the Old Testament with New Testament eyes. What is at stake is a comprehensive hermeneutical key. By predictive prophecy, by type, and by revelatory event, the Old Testament is understood to point to Christ—His ministry, His death, His resurrection, His ascension, His reign, and His return. The most essential hermeneutic for interpreting Scripture is recognizing that the Bible is a book about Jesus.
The Promise of the Gospel Genesis 3:15 contains the “proto-evangel,” the first gospel. This talk will show how this promise, which paradoxically is found in God’s curse upon the serpent, is like a thread that runs through all of Scripture, and ultimately finds fulfilled in Jesus, the seed of the woman, who crushes the serpent’s head.
All Nations Will Bow to Him Psalm 2 looked forward to the coming ruler who’d wield supreme authority over every aspect of life and this talk will show how Jesus Christ is that ruler who presently reigns with all the authority prophesied in this Psalm. It will also show that unless all nations bow to His absolute dominion in time and history, they will be utterly destroyed by Him.
The Sacrifice and Resurrection of Isaac Genesis 22 is one of the clearest “types” of Jesus’ substitutionary, penal atonement. The typological sacrifice and “resurrection” of Isaac on Mt. Moriah looks forward to the sacrifice and resurrection of the “greater Isaac” on Mt. Moriah. This talk will show that there is no contradiction between an historical interpretation and a typological one. In fact, it will show how the two are necessarily interwoven.
The Great Priest and King to Come Genesis 14 reveals the unique combination of the same person being both priest and king at the same time, thus setting the stage for the great Priest and King who was to come. The passage quoted most often by New Testament writers from the Old Testament also focuses upon the distinct Messianic characteristics of Him being both Priest and King and this talk will seek to show what this means for His followers today.
Joseph and the foreshadowing of Jesus Christ This talk will briefly survey the story of Joseph found in Genesis 37-39. Though this is a familiar story in the Old Testament we will discover a greater appreciation for the depths of it's beauty, God's covenant faithfulness, and the foreshadowing of Jesus Christ.
Old Testament Deliverance and Resurrection Themes in the Art of the Roman Catacombs The persecuted early Church in Rome filled its burial chambers with thousands of grave-covering artworks. Curiously, there are no themes of death. Even more astounding is the total absence of crosses. Their hope and confidence was in Resurrection, to which they found ample evidence in the Old Testament Scriptures. This presentation will give visual evidence to the power of resurrection as seen in the pre-legalized Church in Rome.
